“CONNECTING THREADS”
Exhibition Artist Statement – Carmel Mackie
watercolour, printmaking and free motion embroidery.
As a Barkindji woman, born in West Wyalong NSW, my creative journey began in childhood through spending many hours with my mother sewing, crafting and making clothes for the family, then later in life I moved on to painting and printmaking. The idea of working with thread, once again, came about through researching textures to embellish my monoprints, besides fabric, paper, tea bags and skeleton leaves.
I am always fascinated by the structures, textures and veins that run through our natural world and embody this in my work thus naming my exhibition “Connecting Threads”, inviting viewers to connect with the environment and contemplate our shared experiences to nature.
On discovering “free motion embroidery” it added a new dimension to my art studio allowing me to explore and be innovative with every piece I construct, paying homage to the generations of mothers who skillfully crafted for their families without recognition.
